Jayapura

Capital of Irian Jaya province in eastern Indonesia, situated in the northeast corner of the territory on the Pacific coast, near the Papua New Guinea border; population (1995 est) 180,400. Founded by the Dutch in 1910 as a centre for administration, and named Hollandia, Jayapura is the largest town in the province, and retained its capital status under Indonesian rule since 1963. Jayapura developed rapidly as a result of Irian Jaya's vast raw materials potential, especially timber and minerals. Industries include furniture, textiles, and chemicals. Copra is the leading export.

Jayapura has an airport, and is home to the Universitas Cenderawasih (1962).
