Sulgrave Manor

House in Northamptonshire, England, 11 km/7 mi northeast of Banbury. It was built by Lawrence Washington in 1560 on the site of a dissolved priory. The present house, altered and restored, was bought by the British public in 1914 to commemorate the Treaty of Ghent.

John Washington, a descendant of the first owner, emigrated to Virginia in 1656, and his great-grandson, George Washington, became the first president of the USA. The house was later endowed in perpetuity by the Society of the Colonial Dames of America. It is open to the public, and contains portraits of Washington and some of his possessions.
