Sullivan, Arthur Seymour (1842-1900)![]() A costume design for the Duke of Plaza Toro, in the Richard D'Oyly Carte company's production of The Gondoliers, by W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, at the Savoy Theatre, London, England. The design is by Charles Ricketts (1866-1931). The first production of The Gondoliers at the Savoy Theatre took place in 1889. English composer. He wrote operettas in collaboration with William Gilbert, including HMS Pinafore (1878), The Pirates of Penzance (1879), and The Mikado (1885). Their partnership broke down in 1896. Sullivan also composed serious instrumental, choral, and operatic works - for example, the opera Ivanhoe (1890) - which he valued more highly than the operettas. |
