Sullivan, John L

Sullivan, John L(awrence) (1858–1918)

US boxer. He won the heavyweight championship from Paddy Ryan 1882 and in the following years toured widely throughout the USA and British Isles. In 1892 he lost his title to James ‘Gentleman Jim’ Corbett in the first championship bout held according to the Marquis of Queensbury rules.

Born in Boston, Sullivan briefly attended Boston College before beginning a professional boxing career. After his retirement from the ring, Sullivan became a popular vaudevillian and was a saloonkeeper in New York.

Sullivan, John L(awrence) (1899–1982)

US lawyer and public official. He was the assistant secretary of the treasury 1939–44 and worked actively on the wartime finances. His tenure as secretary of the navy 1947–49 was cut short when he resigned in protest over the cancellation of the navy's first supercarrier.

He was born in Manchester, New Hampshire.
