Sullom Voe

Long, deep sea-inlet on Mainland, in the Shetland Islands, Scotland, penetrating into the northern part of the island, 35 km/22 mi north of Lerwick. It is 12 km/7 mi in length. A vast complex for the storage and transhipment of North Sea oil has been constructed on its shores. This is fed by submarine pipelines from northern offshore fields, and has the capacity to take supertankers. This oil terminal, built between 1975 and 1982, is the largest of its kind in Europe.

The inlet reaches its head at Mavis Grind, a narrow neck of land connecting the northernmost part of Mainland to the remainder of the island. During World War II Sullom Voe was used as a base for the Norwegian Air Force and RAF seaplanes.
