Sully, Thomas (1783–1872)

US painter, born in England. He studied in the USA and England, his portraits reminiscent of those of the English painter Thomas Lawrence. He worked mainly in Philadelphia, and was a prolific artist who produced a great number of portraits, miniatures, and subject pictures.

Sully was taken to the USA as a child and became an American citizen 1809. He studied the works of Gilbert Stuart, John Trumbull, and other US painters and with the help of patrons went to England, where he was assisted and advised by Benjamin West. He returned 1810 and settled in Philadelphia.
