sulphate

Salt or ester derived from sulphuric acid. Most sulphates are water soluble (the chief exceptions are lead, calcium, strontium, and barium sulphates) and require a very high temperature to decompose them.

The commonest sulphates seen in the laboratory are copper(II) sulphate (CuSO4), iron(II) sulphate (FeSO4), and aluminium sulphate (Al2(SO4)3). The ion is detected in solution by using barium chloride or barium nitrate to precipitate the insoluble barium sulphate.
