Sulu Archipelago

Group of about 870 islands off southwest Mindanao in the Philippines, between the Sulawesi and Sulu seas; area 2,700 sq km/1,042 sq mi; population (1990 est) 698,200. The capital is Jolo, on the island (the largest) of the same name. Until 1940 the islands were an autonomous sultanate.
