Sulzberger, Arthur Hays (1891–1968)

US newspaper proprietor. Between 1935 and his retirement in 1961, Sulzberger expanded the circulation of the New York Times both throughout the USA and the world. He often declared that he never wanted the paper to become ‘too livened up’, either in Paris, France, or New York City, claiming that ‘the good grey Times is still the best there is and should stay that way’.

Sulzberger was born in New York City. He was educated at Columbia University. He started work in the cotton goods business in 1914. In 1917 he married the daughter of Adolph Ochs, owner of the New York Times, whom he succeeded as publisher in 1935.
