Sumqayit

Industrial city in Azerbaijan, situated on the northern shore of the Apsheron Peninsula of the Caspian Sea, 25 km/16 mi northwest of Baku; population (1990) 234,600. Sumqayit is the centre of the metallurgical industry in Azerbaijan, and contains a steel-rolling mill and an aluminium smelter. Chemical works producing synthetic rubber, fertilizers and caustic soda are also sited here.

Sumqayit was founded in the 1940s as an industrial city to aid the Soviet Union's war effort. Fighting broke out here in 1988 between Armenian and Azeri residents over the attempted secession of the Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.
