Summersville

Town and administrative headquarters of Nicholas County, south-central West Virginia; population (1990) 2,900. It is in an agricultural and coalmining area.

History

In July 1861, during the Civil War, Confederate spy Nancy Hart led an attack that briefly captured the town. On 26 August, Union forces were beaten in a skirmish at Cross Lanes, 5 km/3 mi to the southwest. On 10 September an indecisive battle was fought at Carnifex Ferry, 16 km/10 mi to the southwest.
