Summerville

Town in southeastern South Carolina, 35 km/22 mi northwest of Charleston; population (1990) 22,500. It is a resort, and also produces timber, fabric, and aluminium.

In the 18th and 19th centuries it was a summer resort (to escape coastal malaria) and then winter resort; many homes and estates of the period are preserved.
