Sumter

City and administrative headquarters of Sumter County, in east-central South Carolina, 68 km/42 mi southeast of Columbia; population (1990) 41,900. It is a transportation and commercial centre. Its varied products have included batteries, processed food, furniture, timber, chemicals, veneer, and printed and dyed textiles. Cotton, tobacco, and soybeans are grown in the area.

It was founded in 1785 as Sumterville, in honour of Gen Thomas Sumter, ‘the Gamecock of the Revolution’. Morris College (Baptist; 1908) and a branch of the University of South Carolina are in Sumter. Shaw Air Force Base to the northwest is a training facility for reconnaissance fliers.
