Louis (I) the Great (1326–1382)

King of Hungary from 1342. He also became, from 1370, king of Poland. During his reign Hungary reached the peak of its political influence. Louis led three campaigns against Naples 1347–52, obtained victory over Venice and gained Dalmatia (1358), occupied Bulgaria and extended his influence over Serbia and Wallachia.

He was the son of Charles Robert of Hungary and Elizabeth of Poland. Louis attacked Naples because his brother Andrew, consort of Joan I, Queen of Naples, was murdered there in 1345. After he became king of Poland Louis ruled the country through regents. Venice finally recognized Hungarian rights to Dalmatia and paid tribute in 1381 after a another war which lasted 10 years.
