Sun Valley

City in south-central Idaho, 5 km/3 mi northeast of Ketchum, between the Sawtooth Range and the Pioneer Mountains; population (1990) 900. It has many sports facilities and is especially noted for its skiing, with slopes on Dollar and Bald mountains.

Built by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1936, Sun Valley Lodge launched the area as a winter resort. Now internationally known, it also offers a variety of warm-weather sports and cultural events.
