Sunnyvale

City in north-central California, at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, adjacent to Santa Clara and 58 km/36 mi southeast of San Francisco; population (1990) 117,200. It is a major manufacturer of computers and computer-related machinery, medical and optical devices, and other high-tech equipment. It has aerospace and other research laboratories and a variety of other light industries.

Settled in 1849, it was a ranching and fruit processing centre until World War II, then boomed with the development of Silicon Valley.
