Sununu, John H(enry) (1939- )

US engineer and Republican governor., He formed J H S Engineering Co. 1965-82, and taught at Tufts 1966-82. As governor of New Hampshire 1983-89, he opposed taxes, recruited new businesses, and supported the controversial Seabrook nuclear plant. As President George Bush's chief of staff 1989-91, he offended many with his brusque manner and became the centre of several controversies; he was asked to resign.

He was born in Havana, Cuba, during his American parents' business trip. For a time he appeared as a television news commentator.
