Surigao del Norte

Province of northeast Mindanao Island in the Philippines, facing Leyte Island across the Surigao Strait; area 2,739 sq km/1,058 sq mi; population (1995) 442,000. The capital is Surigao. The economy is based on timber production, farming, fishing, and the export of abaca (hemp) and copra. There are mineral deposits of iron ore, manganese, and nickel. Mabua beach is a tourist resort.
