Surigao del Sur

Coastal province of eastern Mindanao Island in the Philippines; area 4,552 sq km/ 1,758 sq mi; population (1995) 471,000. The capital is Tandag. All the major settlements are on the coast. Farming is the main occupation with rice, corn, and tubers being grown. Timber and coconuts are produced, and there are iron ore deposits. The first integrated newsprint and paper plant in Southeast Asia is located in the province.
