Surkhandarya

Wiloyat (region) in southeastern Uzbekistan; area 20,800 sq km/8,031 sq mi; population (1996) 1,336,000. The capital is Termez. Industries include oil extraction, coalmining, metal processing, cotton ginning, and the manufacture of foodstuffs and building materials. The principal crop is cotton.

The region borders Tajikistan on the east and Afghanistan on the south, where the Amu Darya River forms the frontier. Most of the territory is mountainous. There are deposits of coal and oil. Cities in the region include Denau.
