Sorrento

The town of Sorrento, on the Gulf of Naples, Campania region, Italy.

Town in Campania, southwest Italy, on the Gulf of Naples; population (2001) 16,500. It has been a holiday resort since Roman times. Products include wine, citrus fruit, fish, and ceramics.

There is a cathedral, and the remains of Roman villas. The poet Torquato Tasso was born here in 1544.

Caroline Lawrence, who has written a series of children's adventure books - the latest being The Sirens of Surrentum - set in ancient Rome, will be discussing her fascination with the historical period and writing fiction that is based on fact.
On the other side of the Bay of Naples, Surrentum was also a favorite haunt of Roman nobles, who built a number of villas at panoramic locations along the coast.
