Surrey, Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey and 3rd Duke of Norfolk

    0.06 sec.

Surrey, Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey and 3rd Duke of Norfolk (1473–1554)

English soldier. He took part in the Battle of Flodden in 1513, and as warden-general of the Marches, devastated the Scottish border and forced the Duke of Albany to retreat in 1523. Having already held the position of lord-lieutenant of Ireland in 1520–21 and lord treasurer in 1522, he was made earl marshal in 1533. He was, however, ousted from favour, and condemned to death; but Henry VIII's death prevented his execution, and on Mary's accession he was released and restored to his former positions.
