Surry County

County in southeastern Virginia, bounded to the north and northeast by the James River and to the south by the Blackwater River; area 728 sq km/281 sq mi; population (1990) 6,100. Its capital is Surry (population (1990) 200). The county is largely agricultural, with dairying and lumbering.

Bacon's Castle is in the southeast. The Surry nuclear power plant (1972) is on Gravel Neck, along the James in the extreme southeast.
