Surtees, R(obert) S(mith) (1805-1864)

English novelist. He created Jorrocks, a sporting grocer, and in 1838 published Jorrocks's Jaunts and Jollities. He excels in the satirical observation of characters and situations from rural society life, such as he demonstrated also in Hillingdon Hall (1845), and Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour (1853).
