closed-circuit television

Localized television system in which programmes are sent over relatively short distances. The camera, receiver, and controls are linked by cable. Closed-circuit TV systems are used in shops, banks, schools, airports, and many public places as a means of security, monitoring people's movements.

Debate over the use of CCTVs, which became widespread in the late 20th century, has centred on perceived intrusion on privacy and civil liberties.
