Sontag, Susan (1933–2004)

US critic and writer. She established herself as a critic with the influential cultural essays ‘Against Interpretation’ (1966) and ‘Styles of Radical Will’ (1969). Subsequent critical works include On Photography (1976), the powerful Illness as Metaphor (1978), Aids and its Metaphors (1989), and Regarding the Pain of Others (2003). Her novels include Death Kit (1967), The Volcano Lover: A Romance (1992), and In America (2000, National Book Award).
