Susanville

City and administrative headquarters of Lassen County, in northeastern California, on the Susan River, 120 km/75 mi northwest of Reno, Nevada; population (1990) 7,300. It has timber mills, makes wood products, and is a trade centre for a cattle and sheep raising area. A state prison, just to the east, is a major employer.

Gold was struck here in 1854, bringing about a brief boom. Lassen College (1925) is here, and Susanville is a gateway to Lassen Volcanic National Park and other lake and mountain areas.
