Sutra-pitaka

    0.02 sec.

Sūtra-pitaka

Second part of the Tripitaka (three baskets), a collections of Buddhist scriptures in the Pali tradition. The Sūtra-pitaka consists primarily of discourses by the Buddha, often in response to questions from specific individuals.

The Sūtra-pitaka is divided into five parts. It includes the Dhammapada, which contains the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, plus other teachings on Buddhist values. Some Buddhists learn the Dhammapada by heart.

Examples from the Sūtra-pitaka:

‘All that we are is the result of our thoughts. If a man acts with evil thoughts, he is followed by pain as the wheel follows the foot of the ox who draws the carriage.’

‘...if a man acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him like his own shadow.’

‘He hurt me, he hit me, he defeated me, he robbed me.’ In those who harbour such things, hatred will never cease.’
