Sutton

Town in central Massachusetts, 13 km/8 mi southeast of Worcester; population (1990 est) 6,800. It is a farming and essentially rural community and was incorporated in 1716.

European settlers first arrived in the area in 1704. The town contained a number of factories in the 19th century but, after the railways passed it by, its industry declined and it returned to farming.

Sutton is the birthplace of US soldier Rufus Putnam. It contains over 70 18th-century buildings and a traditional town common.

Town in south-central New Hampshire, 37 km/23 mi northwest of Concord, and 6 km/4 mi east of Lake Sunapee; population (1990 est) 1,500. It is in an agricultural and resort area, with a number of lakes and ski slopes.
