Sverre

Sverre (1151–1202)

King of Norway. He was a native of the Faeroe Islands. Sverre was proclaimed king in 1177, having been adopted as leader by the Birkebeinar. He was a military genius, and having defeated Magnus (who was slain) at Fimreite in 1184, he built up a powerful monarchy in spite of opposition from the Church.
