Swaffham

Market town in Norfolk, eastern England, 24 km/15 mi southeast of King's Lynn; population (2001) 6,900. Industries include agriculture, fruit canning, and the manufacture of fireworks. It has a 12th-century priory, a 15th-century church with a carved roof, and a market cross.

The 15th-century legend of the Swaffham pedlar is commemorated by an effigy. A pedlar from Swaffham dreamed that he would have good fortune if he went to London Bridge. Standing on the bridge, he met a shopkeeper who said he had dreamed that if he dug under a tree in an orchard belonging to a pedlar from Swaffham, he would find a pot of gold. The pedlar went back to Swaffham, dug up a pot of gold, and restored the church.
