Swain, Freda (1902–1985)

English composer and pianist. She studied composition with Patric Stanford and piano with Arthur Alexander, whom she married in 1921. In 1924 she became professor at the Royal College of Music.

She studied at the Tobias Matthay Piano School in London and at the Royal College of Music.

Works

Orchestral

Pastoral Fantasy for orchestra; piano concerto (Airmail), The Harp of Aengus (after Yeats) for violin and orchestra.

Chamber

string quartet Norfolk; violin and piano sonatas in C minor and The River, cello and piano sonata, duets for two violins; songs to texts by Burns, Bridges, and Housman.
