Swains Island

Island that forms part of American Samoa (since 1925); area 2.6 sq km/1 sq mi; population (1990) 16. Some 360 km/225 mi northwest of Pago Pago, Tutuila, it is not part of the Samoa Islands chain.

Privately owned and long under the jurisdiction of Britain's Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony, it came under US jurisdiction in 1925.
