Swaledale

River valley extending from Keld to Richmond, in the Yorkshire Dales national park, North Yorkshire, England; length 32 km/20 mi. It is the narrowest of the northwest dales. A former lead-mining area, Swaledale is now chiefly agricultural, though tourism is also a major industry. It gives its name to a breed of horned sheep. Buttertubs Pass (526 m/1, 726 ft) connects Swaledale and Wensleydale.

Arkengarthdale, a branch dale, starts from the village of Reeth and leads to Tan Hill Inn, England's highest inn (527 m/1,728 ft). Below Reeth are the ruined nunneries of Marrick and Ellerton.
