Swampscott

Town in northeastern Massachusetts, in Essex County, between Lynn and Marblehead on Massachusetts Bay; population (2000 est) 14,400. It is a North Shore suburb of Boston and Lynn. Tourism and commercial fishing are the main industries. It was incorporated in 1852.

Settled in 1629 by the Massachusetts Bay Colony as part of the industrial city and seaport of Lynn, the town was separated from this area in 1852. It developed as a fishing village and other industries included shoemaking and farming. US inventor Ebenezer Thorndike created the lobster pot here in 1808 and in 1840 a flat bottomed boat, the Swampscott dory, was devised by US inventor Theophilius Brackett for use in lobster fishing.

The Swampscott Historical Society is housed in a saltbox house dating from 1637. Swampscott was the site of many large summer lodges in the 19th century. One belonged to US inventor Elihu Thomson; his house is now the town hall. Another summer visitor was US president Calvin Coolidge. Mary Baker Eddy, US founder of Christian Science, lived in Swampscott in 1866 and her house is now a museum.
