Swan, John William David

    0.04 sec.

Swan, John William David (1935– )

Bermudian centre-right politician, prime minister 1982–95. Leader of the liberal-conservative United Bermuda Party (UBP), he replaced David Gibbons as prime minister in 1982, and oversaw the continued development of the island as a prosperous centre for tourism and offshore banking. An advocate of independence from British colonial rule, he resigned as prime minister after a 1995 referendum voted decisively against constitutional change, and retired from the assembly in 1997.

A businessman-turned-politician, Swan was first elected to the Bermuda assembly in 1972 and served as home affairs minister 1978–82. Under Swan's leadership, the UBP won the general elections of 1983, 1985, 1989, and 1993.
