Swank, Hilary Ann (1974– )

US actor. She became internationally known for her starring roles in the indie drama Boys Don't Cry (1999) and Clint Eastwood's boxing drama Million Dollar Baby (2004), both of which earned her Academy Awards for Best Actress. Later films include the supernatural drama The Gift (2000), the thriller Insomnia (2002), and the science-fiction adventure The Core (2003).

Her first major film was Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), and she gained wider recognition for The Next Karate Kid (1994). Television work includes the popular teen series Beverly Hills 90210 (1997–98).

Boys Don't Cry, a violent drama about the tragic consequences of a young woman's decision to lead her life as a man, was based on the true story of Teena Brandon. Million Dollar Baby explored the rise of a struggling female boxer and her troubled trainer. Swank won tremendous critical acclaim for her intense and sensitive portrayals.
