Swanson, Gloria (1899–1983)

US actor. A star of silent films, she became the epitome of glamour during the 1920s. She retired in 1932 but made several major comebacks. Her work includes Sadie Thompson (1928), Queen Kelly (1928; unfinished), and Sunset Boulevard (1950).

She was second only to Mary Pickford in fame and in 1926 she formed her own production company with Joseph Kennedy as her financial backer. Other films include Don't Change Your Husband (1919), Male and Female (1919), Zaza (1923), Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1923), Madame Sans-Gêne (1925), and her first talkie, The Trespasser (1929).
