sweets

Confectionery made mainly from sucrose sugar. Other ingredients include glucose, milk, nuts, fat (animal and vegetable), and fruit. Boiled-sugar sweets contain sugar, glucose, colour, and flavouring, and are boiled, cooled, and shaped.

Chewing gum consists of synthetic or vegetable gum with colour, flavouring, and sometimes sweetener added. Toffee and caramel are made from sugar, glucose, animal fat, milk, and cream or vegetable fat, heated and shaped. The USA is the biggest producer of sweets, though the UK has the highest consumption, with millions of pounds spent each year on advertising.

In the USA, the term often includes a wider range of confections, for example chocolate, jellybeans, liquorice, taffy, and fudge.
