Swords

Town in County Dublin, Republic of Ireland, 20 km/12 mi north of the city of Dublin; population (2002) 24,950. Swords has large manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and mobile phones, and smaller chemical and light manufacturing industries.

Colum Cille (St Columba) allegedly founded a monastery here in the 6th century. Swords Castle, begun in 1200 but altered in the 13th and 15th centuries, is in the form of a pentagon and was originally the residence of an archbishop.
