Sybel, Heinrich von (1817–1895)

Prussian historian. He worked as a professor at Bonn, Marburg, and Munich universities. He founded the Historische Zeitschrift, soon the most important of German historical journals, and later was director of the Prussian state archives. Sybel was one of the most influential interpreters of 19th-century German history, moving from initial dislike of Bismarck to enthusiastic approval, especially for the Kulturkampf. Sybel was born in Düsseldorf, Germany.
