| Town in eastern Nova Scotia, Canada, on the north side of Sydney Harbour, 13 km/8 mi northwest of Sydney, Cape Breton Island; population (1991) 7,600. Coal was mined here from the early 18th century until the 1970s, when the industry collapsed leaving Sydney Mines depressed. |
