Syktyvkar

Capital of the autonomous republic of Komi, in northern central Russia, 1,100 km/684 mi northeast of Moscow; population (2002) 230,000. Situated on the Vychegda River, it has a large timber industry; other economic activities are paper milling and tanning. The city was founded in 1740 as a Russian colony, and formerly had a flourishing grain and fur trade.
