sympathetic string

A string on a musical instrument which is not plucked, bowed, or hit by a hammer, but sounded by means of sympathetic resonance. Instruments employing sympathetic strings in order to enrich the timbre include the Hardanger fiddle, viola d'amore, and certain pianos.
