SMIL

A technology developed by the World Wide Web Consortium to enable the delivery of multimedia presentations over the World Wide Web. Different media sources, such as video clips, audio recordings, images, and text are displayed according to a pre-determined sequence written in the SMIL markup language. Areas of the multimedia presentation can be turned into the hyperlinks pointing to other web pages, and special techniques allow for efficient streaming of large files to improve download times and performance. Microsoft has been part of the SMIL development effort, but they have added some extra functionality of their own and call their technology HTML+TIME.
