Szmytka, Elzbieta (1956– )

Polish soprano. She studied in Krakow (1975–82), and first appeared in the West as Mozart's Blondchen, Despina, and Serpina (La finta giardiniera). She sang Nannetta in Falstaff at Brussels and Aix-en-Provence (1987–88), and Papagena at the Vienna Staatsoper (1988). She appeared at Glyndebourne in 1991, as Ilia and Servilio (La clemenza di Tito/The Clemency of Titus). She sang at the 1992 Salzburg Festival, in Janáček's From the House of the Dead; in 1993 she appeared during the ‘Mozartwoche’ held there, as Cinna in Lucio Silla.
