Szokolay, Sándor (1931– )

Hungarian composer. He has been influenced by Hungarian national music and by Stravinsky and Orff.

He studied at the Budapest Academy and taught there from 1966.

Works

Orchestral

violin concerto (1957), piano concerto (1958), Déploration, trumpet concerto (1968).

Ballet

Urban and the Devil (1958), The Ballad of Horror (1960).

Choral

oratorios, including Fiery March (1958), Ishtar's Descent into Hell (1960), Apocalypse (after Dürer, 1971); Requiem for Poulenc for piano, chorus, and chamber orchestra (1964).

Opera

Blood Wedding (after Lorca, 1964), Hamlet (1968), Samson (1974); radio opera Deluded Peter (1978), Passion-opera Ecce Homo (1987).
