Szold, Benjamin

Szold, Benjamin (1829–1902)

US rabbi of Hungarian origin. He edited a popular revised prayer book in 1863. A notable scholar, he was also an early Zionist and was devoted to public causes, including abolition.

Szold was born in Nemeskér, Hungary. Educated in Vienna and Breslau in Poland, he went to the USA in 1859 to be rabbi of Congregation Oheb Shalom in Baltimore, which he served for more than 40 years.
