Tábor

Industrial town (textiles, tobacco) of southern Bohemia, in the Czech Republic, on the River Lužnice, 75 km/47 mi south of Prague; population (1991) 36,300. It was founded in 1420 as the military stronghold of a Hussite community of religious and political dissenters known as the Taborites.

In the 15th century Tábor had 14 km/9 mi of catacombs under it to provide refuge for citizens under attack. Today, 650 m/2,167 ft of the system can be visited.
