Târgu Jiu

Capital of Gorj county, southwest Romania, near the River Jiu, 90 km/56 mi northwest of Craiova; population (1993) 97,000. Large coal- and oilfields found locally, and timber trade, have encouraged its rapid growth since 1945.

Târgu Jiu was the home town of the sculptor Constantin Brâncuşi, who created a memorial 1937–38 in the town to commemorate those who fell in World War I.
